At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Be it enacted by this Generall Assembly and by the authority of the same that within every parish within this Government there shall be one or more places apoynted for the Buriall of the Dead and before the Corps be Interred there shall be three or ffour of the neighbours att Least called who may in Case of suspition view the Corps and according to the Desent Custome of Christendom accompany it to the Grave and that no person shall be buried in any other place then those so appoynted ."
