At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Ketchum states that he received Robert, Jr.'s letter requesting the settlement of their account, and explains that he has made every effort to procure the money, but has found it impossible. He requests more time to find the money, and promises to do it with the greatest speed.
