At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

James Duane writes that he and his family are in good health and spirits, and thus asks Robert, Jr.: "But what my dear Sir shall I say on the tender subject of your present uneasiness! . . . Your own Piety and Fortitude can alone teach you Patience Resignation and Forgiveness." He also notes that his sister-in-law "Kitty" [Catharine] is in great distress due to her father's displeasure with her.
