At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John Van Renselaer explains that the south end of his estate is to be surveyed, but a great portion of the boundaries run through land that is now a part of Livingston Manor. He therefore requests Robert, Jr.'s permission to run through these lands while the survey is conducted. Docketed on address leaf.
