Yates discusses the recent Stamp Act and declares: "The Stamp Act I believe appears to us as odious as to any of his Majesties American subjects but I think We are to Blame for not having Appeared in Publick for how is the World to know our Like or Dislike." He also notes that New York merchants seem more resolute in their opposition to the act, as they have refused to accept any shipments of goods while the act is in effect.
