At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gunn writes that the bearer of the letter has suffered a great number of misfortunes at the hands of the French, and is now left destitute because of it. Nonetheless, he is a most respectable gentleman, and Gunn asks if Robert, Jr. would be so kind as to "introduce him to a school and divise some Means whereby he might be furnished with Necessarys to returne to his Friends or acquaintances."
