Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

William Elphinstone sends his sympathy to Robert, Jr. who suffers the double burden of a sore knee and a very ill son. He also states that he and his wife have grown tired of traveling, and asks Robert, Jr. for his advice on where they should settle down to start a small trading business.
