At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In the trial of Robert and Johannis Van Deusen v. Josiah Loomis, Ebenezer Loomis states that he remembers that the late Philip Livingston allowed his brother Josiah Loomis to build a house and farm upon the land called Taghkanic. He also notes that about a year ago, Robert Livingston, Jr. ordered Josiah Loomis off of the farm at Taghkanic.
