Philip expresses some concern regarding an affair with Captain Arthur and the Sherrif, and fears he may be expected to pay some money as a result. He also discusses his difficulty in finding men to work at the newly constructed iron works, and how frustrating it is to see the new works left idle. Pages 2 & 3 are another letter dated 19 October 1742. Philip expresses joy and relief at the news of Capt. Boyd's escape from the enemy and subsequent arrival in Amsterdam. He also mentions his fear of a war with the French, especially since the frontiers are open and particularly vulnerable to attack.
