Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Vetch writes his mother in law, Alida, that he shall always have her in his thoughts, and that he will soon depart on another voyage. He hopes that Alida will look after his wife Margaret in his absence, and also forwards some effects of a voyage he recently took. Docketed on address leaf.
