At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Council orders Johannes Rosenboom and his company of traders to be kind and civil to the Indians at Ottowa, and to try to persuade them to trade and correspond with the people of Albany. They also request that Rosenboom make an alliance with the Ottowa Indians, and to make a careful selection of an officer to be their commander. Written at Fort James (formerly Fort Amsterdam)
