At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Andrew Hinman and Thomas Knowles describe a piece of land and ask if Livingston would be interested in purchasing it. Below their letter Livingston wrote a response on 3 March 1723 explaining that that land has been in his patent since 1686. Docketed on address leaf.
