At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Philip explains that the new trade restrictions have heightened tensions with the French, who have sent an Indian spy down to Albany. He also mentions keeping a continuous correspondence with the Governor in order to "wage war" against his and his father's "enemies," and discusses his son's illness. Docketed on address leaf.
