At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One undated image was taken by Andrew J. Russell. The image is of a stretch of the James River; the specific scene has not been identified. The image may have been taken during General George B. McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. It depicts the banks of the river, rising towards small bluffs with a sparse scattering of trees. The mount has suffered some damage.
