At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Records that at a meeting of the volunteers at Rubicam's Tavern a communication was received from Jonathan Williams, the chairman Philadelphia's Committee of Defence (see GLC02978.21, GLC02978.22, and GLC02978.23). Resolves to organize a committee to produce a requested list of member names, to be available for future service, and to complete sodding at Fort Hamilton, "to prevent...all the calamities of the approaching winter." Possibly written by Robert M. Patterson.
