At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The author tells a story about how they were given permission to talk to the ladies and hold their umbrellas for them. They got into some kind of battle and couple men were wounded and killed. A soldier called "Carrot Top" passed away and they had a wake with plenty of whiskey...
