At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he has not heard from her since December 1864. Reports that the whole army is heading through North Carolina to Virginia. Notes Shaman's [General William T. Sherman] Army has destroyed all the railroads between Augusta, [Georgia] and Chesterville, [North Carolina?]. Comments that the people of South Carolina are beginning to feel the effects of the war as those in other states have felt all along.
