At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that they are going to strike at the railroads near Bridge Port, Tennessee, unless they run into Yankees along the way. Reports that Jefferson Davis visited camp and told the Colonel of the 63rd Virginia that they would be coming back to Virginia when the present campaign is over.
