At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Notes that there are many wounded and sick men in the regiment. Reports that the Yankees bombed his position for 15 minutes and then began to talk to them about trading tobacco for coffee. Says he heard a rumor that they will be allowed to return to Virginia.
