At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

[cousin]. [bottom section of the page missing]. Flora has been afraid to send a letter for fear that it will get contaminated with smallpox. Her sister will no longer eat any meat for fear of the disease. The war has jaded her. Sometimes she thinks it might be better "to die than to live in this dreary world."
