At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Irvine, a member of the Continental Congress and former Brigadier General in the Revolutionary War, writes to an unknown recipient. Refers to an enclosed sketch of the Allegheny River (not included with this document). Discusses navigation of the Allegheny, Susquehanna, and Tioga Rivers in Pennsylvania. Addresses possibilities for navigating French Creek and (Conewango?) Creek. Only the last page of this document survives.
