At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Seddon, Secretary of War, replies to a communication from Smith, "concerning the statements of the Senators and Delegates of the Counties of Hardy and Hampshire, in reference to the conduct of some of the Cavalry of the Confederate States in the recent expedition unto those counties." Informs Smith, Governor of Virginia, that necessary papers have been sent to General Robert E. Lee, so that Lee may investigate the matter. Written on Confederate States of America War Department stationery.
