At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly to General William Wallace Harllee. Manigault, Colonel of the 10th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, 1st Military District of South Carolina, encloses copies of orders and instructions from General Roswell Sabine Ripley (orders not included). Writes, "In accordance with which, I would request you to send to me, as a reinforcement in as short a time as possible, one regiment, or as many companies as will give a force of 800 men..."
