At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Confederate General Lomax writes to Colonel Otey of the Army of Tennessee to request that he be sent to Virginia to resume command of his division. Details the circumstances that caused him to become detached from his command. Endorsement dated 16 April 1865 by General Beauregard on the verso of the letter approves Lomax's request. One bust engraving of Lomax included as collateral.
