Discusses the hard times her family is experiencing. Mentions her mother is still ill and is expected to die soon. Notes her brother's (the only remaining brother out of three) health is still precarious and all of her sisters have had fevers this summer. Discusses her options if she loses both her brother and mother and appears to hint at her wish to live alone if she cannot remain with her sisters. Written from North Santee, present day Santee, South Carolina.
