At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writing on behalf of his relative James Wendell, asking Knox to purchase a piece of land Wendell owns adjoining the Waldo patent. James Wendell claims to own about two thousand five hundred acres adjoining the Waldo patent which he wishes Knox to purchase. If he does so "on generous terms" John will give a piece of land in Portsmouth to the Flucker family, Knox's in-laws.
