Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The first part, dated 18 March 1785 in Boston, discusses the state Senate's recent rulings regarding the boundaries of the Waldo patent and subsequent petitions asking for different boundaries to be considered. The second part, dated 2 April 1785 in Warren, Maine, declares that the first part is a copy written by a Colonel Jones, Representative of the town of Bristole, and it is signed by William Lermond.
