Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Probably items purchased by William Knox while he was in Europe. Nettleshipp owned a store called "the Parrott" which was "at the Corner of Honey Lane, Cheapside." Purchased one hoop ring and "finest white paste." The total was for £1.18. Signed by a W. Blackhouse that he "Recd the Contents for Mr Nettleshipp." There is a printed image of a parrot in the upper left corner of the document.
