At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that he has written to a Mr. Sumner to ask for men to work at his business, and also for mattresses and blankets for them to use. Discusses developments with his lime works, such as the construction of kilns. Asks Knox to send several barrels of pork and beef so he can feed his workers.
