At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by "Civis," likely a pen name. Has enclosed a memoir about the state militia (not present). Explains briefly about the letter's content. Adds that he wished to have a member of the military present the letter to Governor Strong, but found he did not have the necessary connections to anyone who could see the Governor in person.
