At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Minutes of meetings concerning land claims of a variety of settlers, examined on a case-by-case basis. The claims pertain to lands "in the first Range North of the Waldo Patent." The meetings were presided over by Salem Towne "in pursuance of a Resolve of the General Court." Minutes were taken by Samuel E. Dutton, who included several comments of his own throughout.
