At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter is not signed but appears to be in Knox's handwriting. Informs Rynier he sold Brigadiers Island, present day Sears Island, Maine, to Rowland Center. Requests Rynier to visit the island and to help John Witherspoon with his immediate removal from the island and to also assist Mr. Center. Mentions if Witherspoon cannot find another arrangement he can use the house formerly occupied by Nathan Griffin for the present time. Also discusses various livestock and other farm items Mr. Center may want.
