At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter is not signed but appears to be in Knox's handwriting. Authorizes a gentleman to hire men to erect dams, houses, and to chop wood. Notes the men's wages will be paid in land at the current market rate. Also mentions he would like various men with trades (blacksmiths, house carpenters, shoe makers, etc.) to settle down with their families.
