At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the production of his limestone. Notes a shipment was returned due to suspicions of the lime being bad. Mentions the reputation of the lime is his greatest concern and requests Gale destroy it. Provides instructions on how to properly manufacture the lime. Mr. Moses Higgins is noted on the last page of the letter, however, the docket notes to Moses Gale.
