At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Secretary of War Stoddert lists the ship needs of the navy. Stoddert thinks one of the big "74 Gun Ships" is to be built in Massachusetts, not any smaller vessels. He tells Knox that he cannot contract with him. Signature has been clipped. Free frank signed by Stoddert, and stamped "Free" on address leaf.
