At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pemberton, principal of an academy in Billerica, expresses his disappointment at not having seen Knox last September. Pemberton has enclosed his bills and those that he has belong to "Messieurs Flukers." The balance due Knox is $40.64, which should be "sufficient to discharge Master Thomas's bills." Pemberton laments the bad behavior of "Master Waldo" [Flucker].
