At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that he has received Hodgdon's shipment, and unfortunately the corn in it was inedible and "infected with the weavil [sic]." Believes he will not suffer too badly from the loss, however. Mentions that he and Henry Jackson are faced with financial difficulties with the bank, and discusses the bank in some detail.
