At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from Warren, possibly in Maine. Writes that he visited a mutual friend, Captain G., that morning for information, but did not receive learn anything useful. Discusses government intervention to convince the people in Knox's territories in Maine that Knox is rightful and legal owner of the territories. Comments on ways to capture and punish Mr. [Samuel] Ely, leader of the insurgents against Knox. Mentions some business concerns.
