At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests Knox's advice and information on an establishment in the Province of [Maine]. Appears to involve Mr. [John?] William's settlement and Mr. [William?] Bingham. The dates, "16 December 1794" and "19 December 1794" and the names "John Vaughan" and "John [Geo] William" were added at a later date in pen at the top of the letter.
