Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks Knox for the many private and public favors he received while in America. Offers his assistance to Knox and his friends if he ever needs it. Also offers to provide any new or "interesting intelligence" from Poland. Updates Knox on political matters in Poland, including campaigns and insurrections. Mentions Bastia surrendered to Lord Hood, mostly due to lack of supplies. Notes there have been several French ships cruising in the Mediterranean, even with the British nearby. Comments the Spaniards were once again defeated in Catalonia. Mentions a rumor about Knox retiring.
