At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

References receiving three letters from Flint, two since he was confined. Says the promised acres that were Flint's payment for his help in the purchase of the 2 million acres has been secured in the agreements and covenants with William Bingham. Any further information will be given by Bingham. Says he is too unwell to write in detail, but "the last contract is so circumstanced that it must be returned by us." Says Henry Jackson is going to New York and is empowered to handle Flint's situation.
