At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks Lucy for her letter, and tells her that he also received a letter the same day from their daughter Lucy. Asks his wife to tell their daughter that he loves her "with all the strength she could desire and that my love is an abundant source of forgetfulness of a thousand little lapses." Provides a brief summary of how he is passing his days while away on business.
