At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Vanden Brock to send his respects to Henry Knox and expresses his hope that Knox will be able to finish business so he can spare the time to visit him. Adds, "I have reason to believe that we will find ways to arrange the business for the land of Maine to the Satisfaction of both parties." Noted as an extract, with an Autograph Note in Knox's hand at the conclusion identifying writer and date.
