At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses merchandise he purchased at Knox's request, and the prices he paid for them. Thanks him for the letter he enclosed from [Samuel] Shaw, and hopes Shaw received letters he mailed to him before Shaw left for Ostend [in present-day Belgium]. Expects to receive mail from him soon. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
