At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by General Hull to Secretary of War Knox. Although "every wish of my heart strongly urges [Hull] again to resume the sword," he must decline Knox's appointment. Says the influence of his friends was decisive. Expresses further sentiments about the appointment and thanks Knox for the "Confidence" he has placed in him.
