At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Secretary of War Knox confirms receipt of a letter Blair sent him on 6 August. Knox informs him he will "promote your views" but believes that now is not the best time to "agitate the point." Instead, will save the issue for the "next session when we shall all be on the spot together."
