At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Draft of part of a treaty. Document reads in full: "First - In order to effect a consolidation of the interests of the United States and the Creek nation, it is hereby stipulated that Alexander McGillivray the beloved Chief of the Said nation shall also be constituted the Agent of the United States in the said nation, with the rank of Brigadier General and the pay of one thousand two hundred dollars per annum, on his taking the usual oaths required by law.
Second - And the said Alexander McGillivray hereby stipulated to use his highest exertions to endeavor to cultivate the firmest friendship between the United States and the said Creek nation.
Third - The United States agree to educate and clothe such of the Creek youths as shall be agreed upon, not exceeding four in a number at any one time."
