At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sends Knox an "Estimate of the Expense of a House in the Eastern Country ... " States that "it is not an exact statement of such a one as you propose, but is sufficient to give a rough guess." Goes on to list all of the supplies to build a house, including lumber with dimensions, nails, shingles and stones with their prices.
