At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Received his last letter with its enclosures to Colonel [Jeremiah] Wadsworth. Discusses his attempts to publish an advertisement Rutledge had also enclosed, and mentions some research he has been trying to conduct. Declares that he would do anything to help his "dear Departed friend [Nathanael] Greene." Provides a lengthy discussion of elections in the various states.
