At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes in full, "I have the honor to acknowledge, on the part of the General meeting of the Society of the Cincinnati, held in May 1787, at Philadelphia, the receipt of your application to be admitted as a member of the said society - I am commanded by the society to inform you, that all applications for admission, are postponed to the next general meeting to be holden [sic] in May 1788; when they will be taken up, and particularly considered."
